The Heckler & Koch HK53 is a variant of the HK33, which is a 5.56mm version of the H&K G3 rifle, but with a resemblance to the MP5. It utilizes Heckler & Koch's roller-delayed blowback system. The HK33 was developed in response to the US adopting an intermediate cartridge during the Vietnam War, although Germany did not adopt the 5.56mm NATO round until the arrival of the H&K G36 rifle. The United States Navy SEALs also used the HK53 during the Vietnam War, designated as the T223 and produced under license by Harrington & Richardson (H&R). The United States Border Patrol still uses the HK53 to this day.
