Gas Airsoft Rifles
Gas airsoft rifles are powered by compressed airsoft gas delivered through the gun’s magazine or reservoir. Gas blowback airsoft rifles have bolts that will cycle back and forth on each trigger pull, greatly increasing the realism of firing the gun. Whilst the form and function of a gas airsoft rifle may be realistic, they do require more maintenance compared to electric airsoft rifles. Popular models of gas blowback airsoft rifles include the Umarex (VFC) MP5K PDW GBB V2, Umarex (VFC) MP5K Early Type Gen 2 Airsoft GBB, GHK (COLT) MK18 MOD1 GBB Rifle, VFC FAL (LAR) Standard Type III, Umarex (VFC) HK53 GBB Airsoft Rifle, Krytac KRISS Vector Airsoft GBB and Tokyo Marui 11.5 inch URGI MK16 MWS GBB Airsoft. The most popular brands for gas airsoft rifles include Tokyo Marui, GHK, VFC, and WE.

Gas blowback rifles (GBBRs) are popular on the airsoft field because they’re fun to shoot and offer a realistic shooting experience. The realism of recoil players feel when running these gas-powered rifles makes the game even more immersive and even brings these replicas to life.

What Is a GBBR Airsoft Gun?
A gas blowback rifle functions similarly to the real-steel variant, with realistic blowback action that simulates the recoil you’d feel shooting an actual firearm.
As the name suggests, these airsoft rifles are powered by gas, be it green gas or CO2. GBBRs can shoot in semi-auto or full-auto and require slightly more maintenance than your average electric airsoft gun.
The non-blowback (NBB) complement to GBBRs doesn’t have the same recoil impulse, although it works similarly, albeit more efficiently. For example, the Novritsch SSX303 Stealth Gas Rifle still uses green gas but is stealthily silent and efficient.
How Does a GBBR Work?
GBBRs require either green gas or CO2. Most green gas variants require magazines that contain a gas reservoir and valve that must be charged to function.
When you pull the trigger on a green gas-powered GBBR, the valve opens for a set period — the dwell time — to let out enough air to propel the BB down range at speed.
The principle is the same for a CO2-powered GBBR, just with a CO2 cartridge instead of green gas. For example, the EMG (APS) F1 Firearms SBR C7M CO2 Blow Back Airsoft Rifle features blowback action powered by a CO2 cartridge loaded into the 30-round magazine.
