About Real M733 Rifle
The M733 is a compact carbine variant of the M16 rifle, developed by Colt and based on the AR-15 platform. It is part of the Colt Commando series, which was designed to provide a more portable, lightweight weapon for close-quarters combat (CQC) and operations requiring greater maneuverability than the standard M16 rifle. The M733, specifically, is chambered for the 5.56?45mm NATO cartridge and operates using a direct gas impingement system, like other rifles in the M16 family. The M733 features a shorter barrel, typically 11.5 inches, which makes it significantly more compact than the standard M16A2 rifle. This design reduces overall length and weight, making it easier to handle in confined spaces such as urban environments, vehicles, or aircraft. However, the shorter barrel also reduces the effective range and muzzle velocity compared to the full-length M16, limiting its performance at longer distances. Visually, the M733 retains the distinctive appearance of the M16 series but often includes a collapsible stock, enhancing its portability. Early models of the M733 were equipped with fixed carrying handles with integrated iron sights, similar to the M16A1 and M16A2, but later versions could be outfitted with flat-top receivers to accommodate modern optics and accessories. The modularity of the rifle allows for the attachment of various tactical equipment, such as foregrips, suppressors, and lights, tailored to the mission's needs. The M733?s compact design and versatility made it a popular choice for special forces units and law enforcement agencies during the 1980s and 1990s. It was particularly useful in close-quarters engagements where the full-sized M16 was too cumbersome. However, advancements in carbine designs, such as the introduction of the M4 carbine, eventually led to the M733 being phased out in favor of more modern alternatives. Despite this, the M733 remains a notable firearm in the history of the AR-15 platform, representing an early effort to combine the firepower of a rifle with the portability of a carbine.
