Traiditional hop-up rubbers have a small contact patch with the BB which does not deliver an effective backspin all the time. Some hop-up rubbers have two small contact patches to provide a more balanced spin, but that still does not provide a sufficiently large enough area for consistent spin.
R-hops are essentially a semi-circular piece of rubber that covers 70% of the BB's upper hemisphere, providing a huge contact patch for much better backspin.
