It was designed by William Mason, an engineer at Colt, and it was notable for being one of the first successful double-action revolvers produced. The Colt M1877 was chambered in .38 Long Colt and .41 Long Colt calibers and featured a distinctive "bird's head" shaped grip. It gained popularity due to its innovative double-action mechanism, where pulling the trigger would both cock and fire the revolver in a single motion.
